Dongen lies in North Brabant, north-west of Tilburg, in the flat, sandy country typical of this part of the Netherlands. The town has a small historic centre around its church and main street, from which older roads lead out toward neighbouring villages. Around it, twentieth-century neighbourhoods fill in the spaces in neat, planned blocks, and the edges of town meet farmland and patches of woodland.
The Wilhelmina Canal passes along the town, a long straight waterway that gives the map a firm boundary line. Dongen was long associated with leather tanning and shoemaking, industries that shaped its growth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
