Aberdeen sits on Scotland's north-east coast between two rivers: the Dee curls in from the south-west to the harbour, while the Don runs along the northern side toward the sea. Between them lies a compact centre of grey granite, which gave the city its nickname, the Granite City. On a map the rivers act like brackets, holding the older city in place.
Union Street runs as a straight spine through the centre, carried over the Denburn valley on a bridge, with a denser pattern of lanes around it. A long, almost perfectly straight street running east to west through the centre, laid out in the early nineteenth century and carried over a valley on a single wide bridge.
