Acopiara lies in the interior of Ceará, in Brazil's semi-arid northeast, a region known as the sertão. The landscape is dry scrubland that turns green only in the rainy months. From above, the town is a compact grouping of streets. Its centre is organised around a few main avenues, and the surrounding land is sparsely settled and cut by country roads and seasonal watercourses.
Like many towns of the Ceará interior, Acopiara's plan is straightforward. It has a denser core with a main square and church at its heart, rows of low houses along regular streets, and newer blocks added at the edges as the town grew. Its population is spread across a large municipality, much of it rural, so the urban area is only a small part of the wider territory.
