Ad Dānā lies in the far north of Idlib province, on flat farmland a short distance from the border with Turkey. On a map the town appears as a spread of low-density streets branching from a few main roads, with the edges dissolving gradually into fields and olive groves rather than ending at a sharp boundary.
To the west the ground begins to rise into the limestone uplands of the Syrian north, a region scattered with the stone remains of late antique villages often called the Dead Cities.
