Agios Dimitrios is a municipality in the southern part of the Athens urban area, a few kilometres from the city centre. It forms part of the continuous built-up area of the Attica basin, so on a map its boundaries are invisible: streets simply continue from neighbouring suburbs, forming a dense mesh of short blocks and apartment buildings.
The land rises towards the east, where the lower slopes of Mount Hymettus begin, and the streets there become steeper and slightly less regular. Vouliagmenis Avenue, one of the city's major arteries, passes through the area in a long straight line, and Metro Line 2 serves it with a station bearing the suburb's name.
The suburb is named after Saint Demetrius, and like much of Athens it grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century.
