Ahraura lies in Mirzapur district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, on the plain south of the Ganges, where the land begins to rise toward the Vindhya hills. On a map, the town forms a dense cluster of narrow lanes and closely packed buildings, surrounded by fields and linked by roads to nearby towns and villages.
The area has a long past. An edict of the emperor Ashoka, inscribed on a rock in the hills near the town, was identified here in the twentieth century and is one of the notable archaeological sites of the region. Varanasi lies a short distance to the north.
