Almuñécar sits on the Costa Tropical in the province of Granada, where the Sierra Nevada foothills drop almost straight into the Mediterranean. On a map, the old town is a tight knot of winding lanes on a rise above the sea. Two bays open on either side of it, and newer streets spread along the shore and up the valleys behind.
The town has Phoenician roots, when it was known as Sexi, and later came under Roman and Moorish rule. The Castillo de San Miguel crowns the hill in the centre, and the rocky outcrop of the Peñón del Santo divides the beaches. Inland, the river valleys are planted with subtropical crops such as avocado and cherimoya.
