The town of Ararat lies in the southern part of the Ararat plain, in the province of the same name. The land here is almost perfectly flat and heavily farmed. From above, the town looks like a rectangle of streets surrounded by a patchwork of fields, orchards and irrigation channels that run to the horizon.
The town takes its name from Mount Ararat, which rises across the border in Turkey and dominates the view from the whole plain. Ararat grew in the Soviet period around industry, including cement production, and a railway line runs past it. The monastery of Khor Virap, one of Armenia's best-known sites, lies in the same province not far away.
