Atraulī lies in Aligarh district in western Uttar Pradesh, on the flat, fertile plain between the Ganges and the Yamuna known as the Doab. From above, the old town is a dense web of narrow, twisting lanes packed closely together. Roads leave the centre toward neighbouring towns, and at the edges the settlement opens out into fields.
The town has a distinguished name in Indian classical music. The Atrauli gharana, a tradition of Hindustani vocal music associated with musicians from the area, is often linked with the Jaipur-Atrauli style made famous by Alladiya Khan.
