Ayer Itam, also written Air Itam, sits in a valley in the centre of Penang Island, west of George Town. On the map a close cluster of streets fills the valley floor, then gives way sharply to forested hillsides. Roads climb and curve toward the reservoir and the hills, so the pattern shifts from dense town to open green within a short distance.
The town is home to Kek Lok Si, one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Malaysia, which climbs the hillside in terraces above the streets. The lower station of the Penang Hill funicular is nearby, and the Ayer Itam market is known across the island for its food, especially its laksa.
