Bandar Lampung sits at the southern end of Sumatra, at the head of Lampung Bay, looking toward the Sunda Strait and Java. The city was formed by joining two older towns: Tanjung Karang on the higher ground inland and Teluk Betung on the coast. On the map, those two centres are still visible, connected by roads that descend toward the sea.
The landscape is much less flat than in most Sumatran cities. Hills rise within and around the urban area, and streets curve to follow them, giving a Bandar Lampung map poster a more organic pattern than a standard grid.
