Biltine is the capital of the Wadi Fira province in eastern Chad, in the Sahel zone between the Sahara to the north and wetter savanna to the south. The landscape is dry for much of the year, and on a map the town appears as a concentrated cluster of streets surrounded by very open land.
The urban layout is simple, with a centre where administrative buildings and markets gather and residential quarters arranged in blocks around it. Seasonal watercourses, or wadis, cross the surrounding terrain, carrying water only during the brief rainy season and otherwise showing as faint lines across the land.
