Bitlis lies in eastern Turkey in a deep, narrow valley south-west of Lake Van. The town has little flat ground, so its layout follows the terrain closely. The main streets run along the stream at the bottom of the gorge, and houses climb the steep slopes on either side in tight, stepped rows. On the map the town appears as a long, winding strip rather than a round settlement.
A castle stands on a rocky spur in the middle of the town, and the old centre is known for houses and mosques built of local cut stone. Bitlis sat on historic routes between Anatolia, Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau, and its narrow passage made it strategically important for centuries.
