Bohodukhiv lies northwest of Kharkiv, on the Merla, a tributary that winds through the open farmland of north-eastern Ukraine. The river runs past the town in a series of loops, with ponds and low meadows alongside. From the valley, streets climb slightly onto the higher ground, where the regular grid of the newer districts spreads over the surrounding hills.
The town is the centre of its district and has long been a market town for the surrounding villages. Its layout mixes an older core with narrow, slightly irregular streets and later additions of more regular blocks. Roads lead out across the fields toward Kharkiv and neighbouring towns, and the railway passes along one side.
