Botou is a county-level city in Hebei, on the open, flat North China Plain south of Tianjin. The land is almost level, so the map is shaped by human lines. There are broad arterial roads, rail corridors and regular blocks. Through them runs the Grand Canal, the historic waterway that once linked the north with the Yangtze.
The canal gives Botou its most recognisable shape from above: a narrow ribbon that bends gently through the city, in contrast with the straight roads around it. Botou is also known in China for metal casting and mould-making, and large works sites show as big blocks toward the edges of the town.
