Burgas sits at the western end of a wide bay on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. On a map, water surrounds the city on almost every side: the sea to the east and three large lakes, Burgas Lake, Atanasovsko and Mandra, to the west, north and south. The city occupies the land between them.
The centre is compact, with a grid of streets near the port and the long Sea Garden park stretching along the coast. Salt pans on Atanasovsko Lake form a regular pattern of rectangles, a striking detail from above, while the port and industrial areas extend along the bay's southern shore.
