Cajazeiras sits in the far west of Paraíba, close to the border with Ceará, in the dry interior known as the sertão. From above, the town is a dense cluster of short blocks surrounded by open scrubland and farm tracks. The streets run in loose grids that shift direction from one district to the next.
The clearest feature on the map is the Açude Grande, a reservoir right beside the centre. Its irregular shoreline gives the urban fabric a soft edge that you rarely see in inland towns. Around it, the older core packs tightly together, and newer neighbourhoods reach outward along the main roads toward the surrounding municipalities.
Cajazeiras is often called the town that taught Paraíba to read. The name comes from the school founded there in the nineteenth century by Padre Inácio de Sousa Rolim, which drew students from across the region.
