Čakovec is the main town of Međimurje, Croatia's northernmost county, a wedge of land between the Mura and Drava rivers near the borders with Slovenia and Hungary. The terrain is flat and fertile, and the town spreads evenly across it. At the centre, the map shows a clear, distinctive feature: a large park enclosing the old castle.
The castle, known as the Old Town of Čakovec, was the seat of the Zrinski family, one of Croatia's most important noble houses.
