Cândido Mota is a farming town in the west of São Paulo state, close to Assis, in a landscape of broad, gently rolling fields. From above, the town is a regular checkerboard of blocks, the kind of planned layout common to settlements founded as agriculture pushed west across the state. The streets run straight and evenly spaced, and the fields come right up to the edge of town.
Large cultivated plots dominate the surrounding countryside, and their boundaries form a second geometry beyond the urban grid. Sugarcane, soy and corn are typical crops here. Rural roads and highways run between the plots in long straight stretches, and small streams cut through the farmland in green threads on their way to the Paranapanema River to the south.
