Chhātak sits on the Surma river in Sunamganj district, in Bangladesh's Sylhet Division. The land around it is low and flat, part of a wetland region of haors, seasonal lakes and rivers that flood widely during the monsoon. On a map, the town stretches along the riverbank, with streets and lanes running back from the water toward fields and villages.
The town has long been an industrial and trading centre. Chhātak is known for its cement factory, one of the oldest in the country, and for trade in limestone and stone brought from the Khasi Hills just across the border in India.
