Chuhuyiv lies on the Siverskyi Donets southeast of Kharkiv. The river determines its shape. It bends close to the town, and a wide belt of wooded floodplain and small lakes separates the built-up area from the far bank. The streets sit on the higher ground and are arranged in a fairly regular pattern.
The painter Ilya Repin was born here in 1844, and a museum in his family house is one of the town's best-known sites. Chuhuyiv also has a long association with the military, and that history is visible in the large sites on the edge of town.
A Chuhuyiv map poster shows the town, the curve of the river and the soft, irregular floodplain together. The grid on one side contrasts with the looser water forms on the other. For many people with roots in the Kharkiv region, it is also a way to hold on to a place.
