Cieza lies in the valley of the Segura River in the Region of Murcia. From above, the river's winding course and the green band of irrigated land along it contrast with the dry, rugged hills around. The old town sits on higher ground above the river, with narrow streets that open towards newer, more regular blocks spreading across the flatter land.
The town is known for its fruit orchards, especially peach trees, and each year the blossom season turns the surrounding valley pink and draws visitors to the area. On a hill above town lies Medina Siyâsa, the remains of a medieval Islamic settlement whose excavated houses and streets offer a rare view of an Andalusi town layout.
