Damme lies in the Vechta district of Lower Saxony, in a part of northern Germany that is usually flat. Here, though, the ground rises into the Dammer Berge, a low range of wooded hills that shapes the town's surroundings. On a map, the forested slopes show as broad open areas on one side, and the town's streets spread across the gentler ground.
The town is well known in the region for its carnival, often described as the largest in northern Germany. That is unusual for an area far from the Rhineland traditions. The Dümmer, one of Lower Saxony's larger lakes, lies not far to the south-east, in open moor and meadow country.
