Enschede is the largest city in Twente, in the east of the Netherlands, close to the German border. Its map is organised in rings. A compact centre with its market square is surrounded by an inner ring of boulevards, the singels, and beyond them residential districts, former industrial sites and green belts spread outward toward the surrounding countryside.
The city grew as a centre of the Dutch textile industry, and former mills have been converted into housing, offices and cultural spaces. The University of Twente occupies a green, wooded campus on the city's northwestern edge. In 2000, a fireworks warehouse explosion devastated the Roombeek district, which has since been rebuilt with new architecture.
