Zwolle, the capital of Overijssel, has one of the most recognisable city outlines in the Netherlands. Its medieval centre is enclosed by a canal that follows the zigzag line of former bastions, creating a clear star shape on the map. Inside, the streets are compact and irregular, typical of an old Hanseatic trading town.
Landmarks include the Sassenpoort, a fifteenth-century city gate, and the tall church tower known as the Peperbus.
