Dure is a small town in northern Xinjiang, in the far northwest of China, in the Altay region near the borders with Mongolia and Kazakhstan. The land here is dry and very open. Steppe, semi-desert and river valleys stretch for long distances, and mountains rise further north. Settlements are far apart, and each town is a clear, small mark on the land.
The town itself has a compact, largely regular street layout, typical of planned towns in this part of China. A main road passes through it and carries on across the open land toward other settlements. Farm fields and irrigation channels may surround the edges, but beyond them the map quickly empties.
