Estácio is a neighbourhood in central Rio de Janeiro, just north of the downtown area and close to Cidade Nova and Rio Comprido. On the map, it sits where the flat city centre meets the first steep hills. Streets are short and dense, and large roads and elevated structures pass through on their way between the city's zones.
The district holds a special place in the history of samba. Deixa Falar, founded in Estácio in 1928, is widely regarded as the first samba school.
