This Githunguri lies in Machakos County, on the broad plains east of Nairobi, and should not be confused with the highland town of the same name in Kiambu. The terrain here is flatter and drier. From above, the settlement appears as a network of straight access roads and rectangular plots spreading out across open land.
Much of the area around the eastern edge of the capital has been subdivided in recent decades. Plots are laid out along simple grids, and houses gradually fill them in. The map therefore shows a place in the process of growing, with dense blocks in some areas and empty, ruled plots in others.
