Gohad lies in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, in the flat country north-east of Gwalior. From above, the town has a clear old centre, where narrow lanes cluster together, and several roads lead outwards across farmland. The town is known for its fort, built by the Jat rulers of Gohad, who controlled the area in the eighteenth century and were rivals of the Marathas and the Scindias of Gwalior.
