Gondomar lies directly east of Porto, on the right bank of the Douro River. On a map, the southern edge follows the river's broad curves, with riverside roads and small settlements along the water. Moving north, the street network becomes denser and more urban where Gondomar meets Porto and Valongo, then breaks up again among hills and woodland.
Gondomar is known as the traditional centre of Portuguese goldsmithing and filigree jewellery, a craft practised here for generations. The town's layout is not planned or regular. Parishes and villages have grown into one another along roads following the terrain, so the streets meet at many angles.
