Gornyak is a town in the southwest of Altai Krai, close to the border with Kazakhstan, and the centre of Loktevsky District. Its name means "miner", and it grew up around ore extraction in the area. The map shows this history in the practical, working layout of its streets.
The town has a loose layout. Blocks of multi-storey housing stand near the centre, lanes of detached houses with long garden plots run toward the edges, and in the industrial areas tracks and access roads spread out. Beyond the last houses the land opens into steppe and farmland, crossed by a handful of roads.
