Gotse Delchev lies in the valley of the Mesta River in southwestern Bulgaria, with the Pirin Mountains to the west and the Rhodopes to the east. On a map, the town fills the flat valley floor, with streets arranged in a mostly regular pattern and the mountains rising on either side as broad, empty spaces.
The town was known as Nevrokop until 1951, when it was renamed after the revolutionary Gotse Delchev. The centre is compact, with a main square and pedestrian streets. Nearby are the remains of Nicopolis ad Nestum, a Roman town founded by Emperor Trajan, which adds a layer of ancient history to the landscape.
