Idappadi lies in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu, in the interior of the state, not far from the Kaveri River. The land around it is mostly flat, broken here and there by low rocky hills, and dry for much of the year. From above, the town is a dense, irregular network of streets that thins out into fields and scattered settlements.
The town has a long tradition of handloom weaving, common across this part of Tamil Nadu, alongside agriculture and trade. It is also widely known as the home town of Edappadi K. Palaniswami, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, whose name comes from the town.
