This Karuri lies in Murang'a County in central Kenya, on the eastern side of the Aberdare highlands. The land here falls away in a series of long ridges separated by steep river valleys, many of them draining toward the Tana, Kenya's longest river. Settlements, farms and roads are spread along these ridges rather than gathered in a dense town centre.
Murang'a is a farming county, known for tea on the higher ground and coffee, bananas and other crops further down the slopes.
