Khagaul lies on the western side of the Patna urban area in Bihar, on the level alluvial plain of the Ganges. From above, the town is a dense web of streets and lanes, shaped by the railway that runs through it. Khagaul is home to the headquarters of a major railway division, and railway colonies, yards and lines form large, structured areas within the urban fabric.
The Ganges flows a short distance to the north, and the surrounding land is flat and closely settled, with neighbouring towns such as Danapur merging into the wider city.
