Koprivnica is the seat of Koprivnica-Križevci County in northern Croatia, in the Podravina region on the lowland near the Drava River. The town sits where the foothills of Bilogora meet the flat plain. From above, its centre is easy to read: a large main square and a network of streets, with broader, more regular neighbourhoods built out around it.
Koprivnica was once a fortified town, and remnants of its old defences survive in the green belt around the centre. Today it is best known as the home of Podravka, the food company behind Vegeta seasoning, and it lies close to Hlebine, the village associated with Croatian naive painting. The railway toward Hungary adds a strong straight line to the map.
