Langen is in southern Hesse, halfway between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, on flat ground with large forests to the west and east. On the map, a small, oval-shaped old town sits in the middle, still partly enclosed by its historic walls. Around it lies a regular grid of residential and business streets, bordered by the main railway line and the motorways that run north to south through the region.
The town has an unusually high concentration of institutions for its size. It is the headquarters of Germany's air navigation service, DFS, and of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, the federal agency for vaccines and biomedical medicines. Frankfurt Airport is a short distance away across the forest.
