The town was founded in the early nineteenth century and laid out on a planned pattern, with streets meeting at regular angles and market squares at key crossings. Shekhawati is known for its painted havelis, the merchant houses whose walls and courtyards are covered in frescoes, and Laxmangarh has many of them.
