Lerdo lies in the state of Durango, on the western edge of the Comarca Lagunera, the metropolitan area it shares with Gómez Palacio and Torreón. The city stands near the Nazas River in semi-arid country, with dry hills to the west. On the map it looks like the final, greener piece of a large urban region stretching east across two states.
The historic centre is laid out on a regular grid of blocks around a main square and church, typical of northern Mexican towns.
