Ma‘arratmişrīn lies in Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria, on the flat, fertile plain north of the city of Idlib. On a map the town appears as a compact built-up area surrounded by fields, with roads leading out in several directions toward neighbouring towns and villages.
The surrounding plain has long been farmed, with olive groves and fields covering much of the land around the town. Like much of the Idlib region, the town has been deeply affected by the Syrian conflict. This page simply describes the town as it appears on the map.
