Manzanares lies in the province of Ciudad Real, in the middle of the La Mancha plain, where the land stays open and level for great distances. The town is compact and dense, with streets converging on a central square. From above, its outline stands out clearly against the regular pattern of vineyards and fields on every side.
The small Azuer river passes through the town and adds a curving line to an otherwise rectilinear map. The A-4 motorway, the main road between Madrid and Andalusia, runs along its edge. Its position on that long-distance route has long made Manzanares a stopping point for travellers crossing the meseta, and roads and railway lines meet here from several directions.
The surrounding countryside is known for its wine and for Manchego cheese, and field boundaries give the edges of the map a fine, even texture.
