Mazouna lies in the Dahra hills of Relizane province, between the Chelif valley and the Mediterranean coast. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets on elevated ground, cut by ravines on several sides. The older quarter shows the tight, irregular lanes of a traditional medina, while newer districts spread more loosely along the approach roads.
Mazouna was once the capital of the western beylik of Ottoman-era Algeria before that role moved to Mascara and later Oran. It became known across the Maghreb for its medersa, a centre of Islamic learning whose scholars were consulted widely in North Africa. That history of scholarship remains central to the town's identity.
