Melle lies in the district of Osnabrück, in southwest Lower Saxony, between the Wiehen Hills to the north and the Teutoburg Forest to the south. From above, it is less a single town than a cluster: a central town with several former villages around it, joined by roads through farmland and woods. The Else river runs through the valley.
The current municipality was formed in the early 1970s by merging the town with surrounding communities, which explains its large area and scattered shape. Melle has a history as a spa town, and it is known for its industry, including furniture making. The motorway to Osnabrück and Bielefeld passes through the territory.
