Menemen lies just north of İzmir, on the flat, fertile plain of the Gediz River. The old town has a close network of streets around its centre, while newer districts spread outward along the main road and rail line toward İzmir. Around the town, fields fill the plain in regular patches, and the river winds westward toward the delta where it meets the Gulf of İzmir.
The town has a long tradition of pottery, and Menemen ceramics are still made in local workshops. Its name is also shared with the well-known Turkish dish of eggs, tomatoes and peppers. The Gediz Delta nearby is an important wetland, home to flamingos and many other bird species, and parts of it are protected.
