Merseburg lies on the River Saale in Saxony-Anhalt, just south of Halle. From above, the river runs along the eastern side of the old town, and the cathedral and castle stand together on a rise above the water. The historic streets spread west from this high point, and later districts extend beyond them into the flat surrounding country.
The cathedral is one of the oldest in central Germany. Its library held the manuscript of the Merseburg Incantations, rare pre-Christian charms in Old High German. In the twentieth century the area became a centre of the chemical industry, and the large Leuna works lie just to the south.
