Merzifon lies in Amasya Province in northern Turkey, on a wide, fertile plain at the foot of the mountains that rise toward the Black Sea region. From above, the town has a compact centre of older streets that gradually opens into newer neighbourhoods and then into fields.
The oldest part of the town clusters around its historic mosque and market area, where the street pattern is irregular and dense. Around it, later development follows straighter roads, and major routes lead out across the plain toward Amasya, Çorum and the coast, giving the map a strong structure.
