Minawa lies in central Kanagawa, in the band of towns between the Tokyo and Yokohama suburbs and the mountains to the west. Like much of the area it is heavily built up, and from above the map fills with small blocks, short lanes and houses set close together. Wider roads cut through this fine pattern at intervals, giving the eye a few firm lines to follow.
The landscape still shapes the plan. River terraces and gentle slopes break the street network into distinct pieces, and across the wider region rivers flow toward Sagami Bay in long, shallow curves.
