Misungwi is the administrative centre of Misungwi District in Tanzania's Mwanza Region, south of the city of Mwanza. The landscape around it is typical of the lake zone: broad, gently rolling land scattered with granite outcrops and farm plots, and water not far away toward Lake Victoria's southern gulfs.
From above, the town is small and open. A few main roads carry most of the traffic, and smaller tracks lead off them toward homesteads and fields. The built area has no dense historic core. Instead it spreads loosely, with plenty of space between buildings, and that open spacing shows on the map.
