Mlalo lies in the West Usambara Mountains, in the Tanga Region of northeastern Tanzania. The terrain here is steep and folded, and on a map the town appears as a small cluster of streets set within a landscape of ridges and valleys.
Roads and footpaths wind along the contours, following the shape of the land. Around the town, terraced fields and scattered homesteads cover the slopes, creating a fine, layered pattern that reflects generations of farming in the highlands.
