Mozdok stands on the left bank of the Terek River in the north of North Ossetia–Alania, where the land has already flattened into steppe. The map shows a town of wide, mostly regular blocks, with long straight streets running across level ground and the river curving along one side.
The Terek here is a meandering lowland river, its course marked by old channels, oxbows and wooded banks that contrast with the geometric town. Beyond the edges, fields are divided into large rectangles, and roads run out straight towards neighbouring settlements. The whole composition feels open and horizontal, with little to interrupt the grid.
Mozdok began in the eighteenth century as a fortress on the frontier of the Russian Empire, and the town long served as a crossroads for different communities of the North Caucasus.
